It feels so good to have everyone feeling well again!

Everyone at school got sick - vomitting, diarrhea for sometimes up to 6 days or possibly longer! We think Lee got it mildly and then Rylan got it really bad and was pretty much on the couch for a week! Then I got it and then everyone was well for a couple days and then we had some really good friends over for dinner, (Isabelle (one of my bridesmaids) and her daughter (flowergirl) Juliette or Jules for short. Lee started having some stomach issues that evening and then the next day Jules got sick and Lee got sicker and stayed home for a few days and then Rylan got it again only a milder version and then Michael got it and then I got it AGAIN! Phew! I think we all reeeeally appreciate and feel lucky to be able to feel well and healthy again!

There has been a lot to write about for awhile. I was having a hard time finding time and then when I was sick I actually got so weak that even typing seemed like too much work! Ahhhhh to have energy again! I have NEVER been so happy to clean the house!

OK I am going to see what I can remember of all that has happened since I last blogged....

I have been noticing the boys have been using alot of new phrases lately that are adorable to hear them say:
"Just so you know..."
"Nothin' to see here!"
"I was not expecting that to happen"

They have been really interested in electricity lately. I read them a book about electricity that has been getting there minds turning and coming up with all kinds of questions. Lucky for me, Michael has a special talent for explaining how complicated things work in a way they can understand.  It is so nice to get them interested in talking about something other than video games sometimes!

I don't know if I have mentioned this before, but I love children's books! So whenever I have a little extra money I really love to head over to Value Village and sift through all their books! Nothing beats .50 a book and every 5th one free! I bring home stacks. I have all kinds of good ones that talk about important subjects like: lying, teasing, having tact, how to calm down, all different kinds of families, people with special needs, how we are all different but all need love, how to know right from wrong, stranger danger, how love always keeps us connected to all the people we love no matter how far away they are. I also like to get the ones to that make the kids laugh because that is what really makes them want to read on their own time. Mo Willems makes some really great books that are funny! One of his series that we always check out at the library is, "Elephant and Piggie" series. These are so great because right now Rylan is the one that is really liking reading right now and when he starts reading one of these books Lee wants to help! There are always two characters and the characters have word bubbles over their heads so they choose who is reading for elephant and who is reading for piggie. There is always alot of punctuation in those books too! So it teaches them how to read with a lot of expression and sometimes they will make up voices. We are going to have to take a video of them doing that sometime it is so cute!

Another thing that we have been doing lately that is working is giving both boys video game minute magnets if Lee reads a story and Rylan sits and listens and helps him if he asks for help. Lee can read well but needs a lot of encouragement to build up confidence and get's very frustrated if he can't read a word so this is the perfect solution!

Lee loves to help! Both boys do actually but lately Lee has been exceptionally helpful. Sometimes he will ask me if I have any chores I need help with and he is disappointed when I can't think of any for him to do! I give them video game minute magnets for helping usually but sometimes he declares that he doesnt need the minutes he just wants to help!

He had some issues with emotional outbursts at school and at home a couple weeks ago that had us worried again because he has made so much progress and has been such a joy for so long that it was shocking to have him revert back so far...but then this entire week he has been amazing! Helping at school, calming himself down and asking for help! Being extremely grateful and thanking us more than usual. Just last night he told Rylan that he is special to him. He has been finding the positive in things more often and both boys have been great at working through conflicts with eachother. We have looked at eachother a few times this week in amazement. We are really lucky.

Yesterday was the school art walk and icecream social. We went last year and it wasn't as cool as it sounds really and Thursdays are the usual day when we go to Nana and Grandpops for dinner. So we had the boys choose. They picked Nana and Grandpops house! Rylan really wanted tacos for dinner (his all time favorite - he can fit 4 or 5 in his little tummy if you let him) so he EMAILED Nana. Both boys have email accounts now and I am slowly getting them interested in it! So if you send them a message it may take awhile to get a reply. Some tips for getting them really interested are: They really like if you use emoticons especially the ones that move, send them pictures, or videos or tell them about funny things that have happened and ask them very specific questions. They have a hard time knowing what to write when the question is, "How is school?"

I love how they play at Nana and Grandpops house. They run all around the yard, ride bikes, play with the tether ball grandpop set up. There is just so much room to run! At our house they have fun exploring and playing with the hose and mud but they can't run as much. Lee usually asks grandpop if they can build something. He always has wood around so Lee picked out a piece to make a puzzle. He drew on it to show Granpop where to cut and afterward he drew an adorable picture of Michael and I on it <3 He is wearing the glasses I used to wear when I was a little girl! Then he put two pieces of wood together and had Granpop screw them to make a "Luigi's Mansion flashlight" to chase Rylan with! We ate dinner outside on the picnic table and roasted some marshmellows by the fire.

The other day we melted crayons onto rocks that were heated up in the oven. It was surprisingly very fun for me too! Now we have some colorful rocks to border the garden!

The boys have been snuggling with eachother more and more. It is really cool to see. In the beginning even though they always liked to play the same things and liked eachother Lee used to be very defensive of his space with Rylan. He didn't like Rylan to touch him or breathe on him or sit too close or touch him with his backpack between their seats in the car. All that has changed. They snuggle, hug, wrestle around ect...

Mother's Day was amazing! I missed Lee being with us, but he made sure to make me feel special the day before. He helped Michael pick out the purple orchid for me that is in the picture below and gave me a picture he drew of me, a note and a flower he made out of pink tissue paper and a pipecleaner. He told me that he made me two things because last year he just made something for his other Mom and wanted to make sure we both had the same amount. I was so impressed that he rememberd that and thought of it a whole year later. Funny thing is that he had forgotten last year to make something for me but told his teacher after Mother's Day and worked on something special with her for me to give me late. So I scored ;-) Also just a few days earlier he had made me a sweet note at home and put it in an envelope and had his dog deliver it to me. Rylan made me an adorable poem and since he was home on Mother's day he helped Michael cook me breakfast! It was delicious! French Toast, Fruit and sausage with some berry mimosa for me!

It was by far the best Mother's Day I have ever had. While Michael was at the store picking up things to make breakfast I cleaned the kitchen for him (it was a complete disaster) and I realized the most amazing thing! I didn't mind doing that on Mother's Day and it didn't even matter what he did for me to make it special because he makes me feel appreciated and special everyday! What an incredible feeling! I used to feel like everything counted on the gifts of service and presents I got on holidays because it was kind of like the only time I felt appreciated and it seemed like ALOT needed to bbe made up for!
In the afternoon we surprised my Mom at work! She really wasn't expecting it because we were feeling sick until the day of Mother's Day and had to go pick up Lee from the ferry so she was kind of expecting we wouldn't be coming over. We showed up 10 mins before her shift ended! Rylan got dapper for her and carried the flowers in to her. My mom works at an assisted living facility for elderly people so it was quite a show. Everyone thought rylan looked too cute! He felt bashful with all the attention and all the fuss like I would have as a child. We couldn't help but think we need to make sure to come back with Lee all dappered up some time since he is so outgoing I am sure everyone would get a kick out of him too! While we were there and EMT was called and a few vehicles came. One of them wasnt being used and the driver offered to show Rylan the inside and gave him a firehat!

On Mother's Day even my garden new to get me something! My first of one of my most favorite flowers bloomed that very day!
Yesterday Lee and I made some paper airplanes! And Rylan worked on finishing up his homework!

Yesterday was parent date night! The kids were really excited because we have missed a few of our date nights because of all the sickness going around. I had Rylan this time and Michael had Lee. We went after dinner to get a little treat. Michael and Lee went to a mexican restaurant where Lee tried Flan and Fried Icecream and played UNO. Rylan and I went to Michael's to grab a little project to do at Starbucks. I let him choose from any of the goodies they had there (I usually have him choose between the healthiest ones) and the strangest thing happened. He didn't want a brownie or cheese danish or cooking with chocolate or a caramel covered muffin, or a cake pop ect...he wanted a yogurt parfait!
We made some 3d paper dogs from the kit we got and he saved one to give to Lee -and Lee LOVES it

I have a younger cousin, Chris that used to live in Bremerton. Decided to join the Peace Corp. moved to Moldova. Met a wonderful woman in the Peace Corp. then moved to Korea with her. They both teach children how to speak english and they are really great with kids. My cousin also in part owner of a screen printing company and for awhile ran a non profit art magazine in Korea to try and give artists exposure. They met rylan and lee one time last summer when they came back here to get married. We went to their reception and camped overnight in my Aunts yard. They made an impression on the kids because they gave them their full attention and asked great questions no matter how long they blabbed on about Mario! Anyhow he has started to send them some mail every so often! They love it! Here is a package of stickers he sent recently:

I made the kids some sticker books and they had so much fun splitting them up and sticking them in their books :)

Awhile ago I was looking around in the fb group I am in called Buy Nothing Kirkland- I think I have mentioned it here before but just in case - it is a group of people that live close to eachother, they post items in fair to great condition to give away. No one trades or buys anything. All the people interested in the item comment on the photo then the giver chooses who they would like to gift to. Then they send that person their address and put the item on their porch to be picked up. Well....when Michael first moved in he brought his cool fish with. Shortly after they died and he was so sad. But he started showing signs of wanting to get fish again but maybe in a smaller easier to move tank. I saw on Buy Nothing that someone was giving away their tank and their fish with it! I said I was interested and they picked me! The tank ended up to be much bigger than it looked in the picture and the fish were pretty colorless but it was all free and they were moving and needed it out asap! It was so hard to move the tank and clean it and everything but I am happy to report now that it make our living room way more awesome. The kids love the fish. The fish have gotten their color back from being taken care of better and Michael talks about them like he did his other fish he loved so much. One of them is a silver angel fish that get's black stripes and moves around like an excited puppy whenever michael is around because he is the one that feeds them!

Ok that is all for now!

Easter Morning

This morning the kids woke up early to find Spider-Man buckets with the gifts they got in the mail from grandparents (thank you!) We filled up plastic eggs - some with money (mostly so they can use it at the little arcade here in Long Beach) and some with some pretty tasty (I may or may not have tried a few) natural flavored and colored jelly beans! Between the two of them they have already successfully tried every type of candy and played with every toy! Lee sharpened all the pencils we brought with the new pencil sharpener, painted one of the Spider Man Easter pictures. Played a trick on Nana by taking the fake spider out of the new bug viewer cup with magnifying glass on top and putting it on top of the coffee pot and named his bunny princess. Rylan kept searching until he found the last egg. We didn't have to police them at all about how many eggs each got or which eggs which is pretty incredible. They figured out what was fair and both were happy with it. Now they are playing pretend Mario Smash Bros with their eggs and the coins as points and power ups. It's a beautiful day here! I am sure I will have lot's more pictures to share later :-)

Road trip to Long beach

We just arrived to the cute cottage we are staying in. Lee cracks me up how he makes himself at home anywhere right away! We hadn't even unloaded everything yet and he already had his coat and shoes off and was in the bathroom going #2 haha!

Both boys didn't get much sleep last night but have been amazing the whole car ride here. We made crackers, muffins, popcorn, hard boiled eggs and sandwiches and both boys ate  sooooo much. They must be going through another growth spurt!

From Conference week in January

It has been a bit since my last post (sorry!) so I am going to post a bunch of random memories and pictures!

Let's start with today, it was so great! Both boys were so sweet and happy!
Sometimes Lee has issues with emotional outbursts in the morning before school but this morning he started out grumpy and turned his attitude around entirely! They had a short school day (out at noon) because this week is conference week. They both were in a great mood after school. My"Mom friend" Lucy's (aka Rylan's giiiirlfriend) mom actually asked me to watch her kids while she ran another kid all the way to the office because her parents must have forgotten it was a half day and the boys rough housed for at least 15 minutes cracking up the whole time! They don't usually rough house the way that most biological brothers do so it is a really cool break through to see them do it. Then when Lee accidentally fell Rylan said sorry and Lee accepted his apology right away and came to me when I asked if he needed a hug! I was so proud of him for not placing blame on anyone or anything and moving right past it!

After we went to the store to pick up some things for dinner and both boys didn't complain at all, (sometimes they make a HUGE deal about having to go into the store with us) it was nice to take time with them and talk about all kinds of things! We talked about which cereal box had the most appealing cover and Lee asked me all kinds of questions about what is healthy and what isn't. It is really wonderful he has taken such an interest in how to balance his meals to make sure he get's nutrition every time he eats and how to pick the healthier treat out of the other treats when given an option. I also had time to ask them to find me the best deal on a few items and to read the ingredients on a couple things! While we were in the store Lee melted my heart with a variation of a song that now has become my favorite for obvious reasons. Instead of the "Jingle bells Batman smells Robin laid an egg the bat mobile lost its wheel and Robin laid an egg..." Lee sang to the same tune, "I love Paige, Dad farts on everyone's face and Rylan laid an egg..."

When we got home I gave them one of their favorite lunches, (grilled cheese sandwich (with hidden veggies) and red bell pepper tomato soup & apple sticks in a log cabin arrangement (haha it's the little things). Lee was so appreciative he told me thank you a few times, told me it was the bestest lunch and that he loved me times a million! Rylan is usually the one to proclaim love for me. Rylan agreed and reiterated everything Lee said. I gave them 2 magnets (which equals 2 minutes of video game time) for the please and thank yous and then gave them a "kindness bead" for their kindness buckets (when they get 15 beads for being especially kind they get a little prize!) It was so fun to really sit with them during lunch too which I have been missing so much. Thanks to Michael last week, we have our dining room table smooshed into our living room area so we can all eat together finally! Before Michael and I would sit at the couch and the boys would sit at their individual little tables. But now those tables are for homework and holding their art easels!

After lunch we played a couple games if Crazy 8's and a few of UNO. It was so much fun! Rylan got a little upset about not winning one of the rounds and cried but then turned it around and Lee was a great sport through all the games even though he didn't win any of them! (I gave him a magnet for sportsman ship too)

Both boys are doing well in school! They both love math and they both are reading well. Rylan is more interested in reading than Lee right now though. He is able to read bed time stories with the correct voice inflections for questions or exclamations and sometimes he uses silly voices. Lee is very good at reading but not as interested on his own and needs to be bribed a bit to read to us. If he is in the right mindset he really does wonderful at it and they have told us that at school his attitude is much better than what we describe at home. Rylan struggles a bit with staying on task in class especially when he is tired. We told his teacher how much he loves technology (as she does) and charts, graphs and checklists so she downloaded an app onto a phone for him so that he can keep track of how on task he is being. It has helped tremendously so far.

Lee has been struggling with his emotions getting out of control a bit more at school lately. We did anticipate it happening with all the changes that come with having a new baby sister so the teachers are all very informed and his teacher is willing to work closely with us to make sure we are all on the same page about how to handle things when they are out of hand. Unfortunately the school counselor that was able to help him so much last year is overwhelmed this year and hasn't had as much time with him so we will be looking for a therapist on our own again....
_________________________________________________________________________

Something incredible that has been happening lately is that both boys have been getting much more creative with their artwork.

The funny thing is that I always assumed that Rylan would naturally be drawn to art because all I used to need as a child was a writing utensil and something to draw on to be entertained. And his biological father at one point in his young adult days hoped to be a cartoonist for a newspaper...but it seems he is too busy thinking about other things to pay full attention to art. In kindergarten he would try to complete his pictures as quickly as possible with one color, whatever color was most convenient to use. He has a beautiful imagination...but he would rather express it in charts, graphs and numbers in his own video games he creates on his white board.

Lee on the other hand is naturally inspired by ANYTHING artistic. He is so excited if he is introduced to ANYTHING new that might make his drawings/creations better/different. Currently he loves having access to my stapler so that he can make envelopes and "Pikmin Hats". Art has really helped us bond. He likes to have control in his life by being the one that knows things (anything) correctly, being the leader, making the directions, being fully informed of what will happen each day, and by not losing/breaking anything that he decides not to lose or break. But then in contrary he will let anyone do anything they want when they create art with him. There are no rules. He will let me use any color draw anything I want even if I take up the whole page. And if you make him something, he will always love it. I have made him things that I saw so many imperfections in and he still loved it. If you really want to give Lee something that will make an impression (ya know besides video games and awesome toys) give him something you made...or even better make something with him.

Michael pointed out how lucky we are that he can see so much of himself in Rylan and I can see so much of myself in Lee. To us it is the perfect situation. Rylan is a part of me but Lee is also a part of me not by blood but by soul.

A few weekends back we didn't have either of the boys. We decided to hang out at home and relax most of that weekend and I missed them so much. I wanted to do something special but we had just paid all our bills and I wanted it to be more special than something I bought. So I made each boy a picture. I worked really hard on them. I actually sketched them out and then painted them with watercolor I haven't done anything like that for YEARS. I made a family of Pikmin (our family) and a Luigi's Mansion picture that was personalized to be our family as well. I honestly thought to myself that the boys probably wouldn't really care...after all it was just a piece of paper I made for them. But they both loved their pictures. They insisted on taking the pictures when we went places and noticed every detail. I told them I looked pictures up on my computer so that I got most the details right. Then Rylan actually started getting really interested in drawing. And both boys have started looking up pictures on their computer to draw.

Movie Night: How to Train a Dragon

Yesterday we all watched one of our favorite kids movies "How to Train a Dragon". Lee made himself a shield and sword out of cardboard and paper just like the swords and shields the vikings in the movie had. He also painted a picture of "Toothless" one of the main characters.

He's holding his shield and sword while snuggling with Dad and watching the movie :)
I just found some drawing tutorials I am going to print for him. I will have to post a picture of what he comes up with from using the tutorials.

New Years Eve

We had the kids for New Years Eve. I searched all over Pinterest looking for ideas on what to do to make it special for the kids. It was actually really hard to find anything cute to do.

I wanted to do this but ended up not having time to get balloons because it took me so much longer than I thought to make paper fortune cookies haha maybe we will do it next time we have them for New Years Eve. The idea is that you have the kids stand under it and then have all the balloons fall down and they pop them or play with them or whatever. I also wanted to wrap up a gift multiple times so they could peel off paper every hour and do a time capsule but I ran out of time...maybe we can still do the time capsule!
I made some fortunes for the kids and some for the adults.

Lee got these ones
Rylan got these

We got the count down on the tv just in time and then both kids ran outside and banged on pots and pans!

And we watched :)

Lee's baby sister...

The day after we got back from the beach and when  Rylan came back from Ellensburg on Dec 29th we got a call that Lee's mom was having her baby. So Lee went to meet her. I didn't know what to do to make it special...and make sure he knew that we cared about it. So I just suggested he dress up in handsome clothes, make her a picture and a bracelet. He made a bracelet that says, "sister".  It looks kind of like this one that Rylan made for me.

This picture was posted on facebook...
He came back home and accidentally told us her name was "Olivia I mean Olivian" It was pretty cute! Her actual name is Vivian.

He didn't really tell us much more about her when he got back because he was so excited to play with Rylan. But today since he is home from school. He is talking to me a little more about her. He said that her eyes opened for a little bit and he thinks they are either bright blue or bright green or maybe even Robins Egg Blue (he knows that is one of my favorite crayon colors)
He said that she moved her hands around a lot too.

Long Beach Trip and Christmas

Well Christmas and Winter Break from school was weird this year...It was Rylan's father's turn to have him for Christmas and asked if he could have him through the weekend because his mom took time off and they were going to stay at her place in Ellensburg. We celebrated a little with Rylan and my parents on the 22nd.  Lee's Mom got Lee the 19th until the 25th so the boys didn't get to be with each other much. I had Rylan home with me alone until the 24th when his father came and picked him up in the morning. So we had no kids the night of Christmas Eve. Michael won some movie tickets from work so we went to a movie theater and saw Mockingjay (it was really good) which was fun - but I don't think we will ever get used to not having our whole family all together during the holidays.

Christmas Day we got to spend time with Grandpa Shad and Grandma Sandy and they brought Lee back home. That was probably the Christmassy-ist time of all the celebrations we had. We don't see them enough so that was really fun! Right after they left I was mad at myself for forgetting to take a picture :-( I almost invited over Nana & Grandpop (my parents) as well but our house is so small I didn't know how we would all fit. It will be really nice if we end up moving into a bigger place in the next year or so. I am really looking forward to being able to have family and friends over more.

Here are pictures of Rylan on Christmas over in Ellensburg. He wore his Santa hat over there and apparently didn't take it off once even to sleep!

The day after we headed over to my Aunt Nicki and Uncle Larry's house in Long Beach, WA
It was super sad that Rylan wasn't with us but it was good for Nana & Grandpop to spend some one on one time with Lee.  The beach was so pretty even in the cold. Lee loved it! And we stayed at a great hotel (Adrift is the name). We had two rooms both with double beds and Lee chose to sleep in the room with Nana & Grandpop which was really cute. They took him in the mornings down to the lobby to get us some of the free coffee and himself some hot cocoa. It was adorable.
We got lot's of pictures at the beach! Lee was in such a great mood the whole time we were there. He is really good at taking long road trips. On our second trip to the beach we found a big piece of styrofoam and turned it into a boat. We spent hours launching it from different areas to see if it could make it over the big waves. Lee got his feet and pants soaked but didn't complain or want to stop, (which is amazing because sometimes he will refuse to keep walking to school if he feels like some of his sock is poking him in his foot).

For some reason there was a ton of foam on this part of the beach. It was windy so Lee had fun kicking it and watch it go up in the air and also trying to get it on Grandpop! :)

The clouds were really beautiful and Lee pointed out how the ocean looked like crystals the way the sun was shining on it.
My parents Nana (Nancy) and Grandpop (Greg)

This is the styrofoam boat. Lee named it porcupine or pokey for short ;)
 Adorableness

 Cheering on Pokey the boat!

Me and Lee talking about what colors we would use to ttry painting the beach at home with his new art desk.
  More cheering on Pokey!
Building a 2 foot skeleton! (one of his Christmas presents)

 Tickles :)

Hiking to the place with biggest waves!
Outside of Marsh's Museum a quirky place that has a "Human Shrunken Head" and "Alligator Man" and all kinds of other kooky old things.

For breakfast we went to Shelburne Inn an old adorable place. Both of their chefs were out sick so the owner cooked our meal and it was delicious! We took a tour after breakfast. I loved it.

This is the hotel we stayed at. Their restaurant has a great view!  My parents got us the room for us to go on a honeymoon but it was nice to have it for this trip instead.

I highly recommend this hotel! Their are always deals on livingsocial that make it very affordable! https://www.livingsocial.com/escapes/properties/71013-coastal-washington-beach-hotel-dining-credit
